I have an extra large bore Heavy Ten headstock waiting for such a bed. Maybe he can tell me where I can get a nice Heavy Ten bed for anywhere near that price.I could have saved some serious money on getting one. I can assist with loading if needed but 2 guys can move it. This wont last long, cabinet is included. Too bad I did not see Hannum reply above that says you can get good lathe beds for $50-$150. 10' Atlas Metal Lathe - 1,500 (Lincoln) Nice 10' Atlas lathe with 3 & 4 jaw chucks, face plate, 52' bed and misc gears, tools, paperwork, etc. they said turn around time about 3 weeks.I guess it all depends on the condition of parts other than the ways and how much you like the lathe before you spend money on an older lathe. Took the bed and carriage down to South Bend factory a week ago. Needless to say I am thrilled with it and decided to have the South Bend factory regrind the ways and scrape in the carrage. Not including the steady rest and follower rest I got with it. expanded thread range QC box and a 2 speed motor with pushbutton control that the new 2002 SB Toolroom lathe looks like at $20,000. It looks identical and has the same equipment, taper attachment, 5C collet drawbar and collet rack, thread dial. was wondering what the specs are to machine one or. we have been told we need to get a leveling plate to attach to the turret to get the machine earth level, we bought this new and we re afraid one did not come with. Two weeks ago I purchased a South Bend Heavy Ten Toolroom Cabinet Base lathe that except for some bed ware is in excellent condition. leveling slant bed lathes we ve recently got a Hyundai skt200 ttsy, and it s our first twin turret, y axis turning centers. I am sure yu will not try to make too large a profit on us poor old fellows. no one can fault you nor help you, and Al gets right of first refusal. But a man wants a new car or a new looking lathe then peace- do what ever you want. If he says he wants a new car because of problems with the old car, I usualy say to fix it or buy another used car. I never argue with a man who falt out admits he wants a new car becasue he just wants a new car. So if you want to make it like new, and if the pitted ways being reground would make it like new then by all means get it re ground- you sure won't ever find another lathe that is like new for a reasonable sum with the same quality. its all tied up in the desire to make it like new- not operating problems. (edit comment- I re=read the original post. Comments cause I really dont know the answer. other than when a surface is so worn that maesurements change alongthe travel IN THE AREA YOU ARE WORKING IN why have them re-ground? and each re grind is one less re grind yu have available. Carters made by a ding are a different matter, but even then, they can be scraped off and no harm is done. Honestly, have any of us ever seen rust pits (as opposed to dings) adversly affect a lathe or mill? Seems to me that if the bearing surface is large compared to the rust pit no damage is done. Al's post should havebeen the FIRST post. Hence, the lead screw's direction of rotation can be changed with respect to the spindle's rotation. You guys are so dumb!!!!! yu built up what sounds like a good bargin to a guy who was almost ready to get rid of it.
Being able to insert the extra gear B into the chain changes the rotation C from clockwise to counter-clockwise. The magic here is in the rotation of the gears. In the lever's other position, the gear chain is S, A, C, D (with B idling). When the lever is in the idle position, the chain is broken and no power is transmitted. So the reverse tumbler gear is in one position, power goes down this path: S, A, B, C, D. Normally they would remain engaged and the reverse tumbler lever left in neutral. The bracket on the bottom is rotated such that the leftmost gear (D) engages C. Note they are permanently meshed!), then through the lower gear (call this C). Here's the way it works - power is transmitted from gear on the spindle (call it S) through one or two of the 'upper' gears (A and B, left to right.
Your's could be different, of course, but there's a chance that the gears on there are the wrong sizes.
And my tumbler gears are different sizes. By the way, that fender washer on the gear connected to the reverse tumbler lever.
